The Human Givens approach has developed out of the realisation that there
are hundreds of different approaches to counselling
and psychotherapy. This is often confusing for members
of
the public who are seeking help in coping with a variety
of physical and emotional challenges. It’s difficult
to distinguish which path is the best one to go down.
Should it be Gestalt Therapy, or the Active Listening
approach of Rogerian Counselling? Is it better to have
Psychodynamic or Insight Therapy? Perhaps one should
have Cognitive Therapy or Behaviour Therapy, or a combination
of both, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy! Then again maybe
Humanistic Psychosynthesis Psychotherapy would be good
or really would Human Relations Counselling be better!
On the other hand, maybe Hypnotherapy, Integrated Therapy
or Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP for short) would
definitely be the best way to go.
This can indeed be mind boggling, especially for
vulnerable people seeking help. It is no less confusing
for GPs wishing
to refer patients to an expert in dealing with emotional
problems.
